Photography Big Year Update 5/30/13

Okay so I am nowhere near where I thought I would be in total birds photographed this year.  I'm also not getting outdoors enough.  I did a scouting trip for my upcoming Columbia Gorge Waterfall Photo Workshop  (June 8th & 9th, more info on the Worskshop page) and we stopped by Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge.  What a great place, lots of birds and I picked up the following two for my  year list.

I like jays and corvids in general.  Next to shorebirds corvids are my favorite group of birds.  They're so smart!  This one was jumping from post-to-post watching something in the grass.  It also has a deformed bill, which seems to be happening more and more these days.

I only had the  Canon 100 to 400 mm zoom lens with me, since I was shooting waterfalls in the Columbia Gorge, but I think not shooting tight makes this image work.  The thistles balance the frame and you can even see part of a spider's web, connecting everything together.

Okay, so now I'm at 97 bird species photographed this year.
