Trumpeter Swans on Lake Washington as seen from Juanita Bay Park in Kirkland. These large graceful and shy birds were fairly far out on the water at Juanita when I was there last week. They are so beautiful and for me calming that I watched them for over an hour. Trumpeter's are the largest waterfowl in North America. But, not too long ago there weren't very many swans left in Washington,. Now they're getting some needed protection and the wintering population is increasing. If you miss them on Lake Washington, they can also be seen up in Skagit County on and near Fir Island and at the Johnson/Debay Swan Preserve.
