5-Day Summer Intensive Bird Photography Workshop

Master all the aspects of bird photography in an intensive 5-day course.  The combination of classroom hours and practice in the field will enable you to learn and master bird photography quickly.  You’ll learn in 5-days what some people take 5-months or even 5-years to learn.

We’ll be outdoors photographing bird in the best light each morning and afternoon/evening taking advantage of the morning and evening golden hours.  We’ll cover birds-in-flight, field techniques, how to approach birds, getting the best angles, how to get the best point of view and working the angles, how to plan ahead to get the best results, when to use Manual Mode, Manual Mode plus Auto ISO, and Aperture Priority Mode.

There will be indoor class room sessions each day and we will cover how to get a sharp image, how to designing an image, using the Exposure Triangle to create the best image possible, composition, post processing in Lightroom with a little help from Photoshop and Photo Mechanic.  There will be an emphasis on how to make an artful photograph, by using design, composition, color and motion blur.

Each day we will spend 6 hours (3 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon/evening) out in the field practicing photographing birds and 2.5 hours in a classroom setting. We’ll do image review in the classroom and in the field.  You’ll learn about the best equipment for bird photography and, you’ll learn how to use the equipment you already have to the best possible advantage.

We will have ample opportunities to photograph shorebirds, gulls, and maybe even a Peregrine Falcon as our subjects. But, this workshop is less about the location or the birds we’ll photograph and more about you learning everything you need to know to start making incredible bird photographs.

Plan on arriving at the hotel on August 25th for an orientation then the 26th through 30th there will be five full days of photography, with five morning and five afternoon shooting sessions. We'll take a break in the middle of each day while the light is harsh and we'll have our indoor class room session. The workshop ends after sunset on the 30th and August 31st is recommended for departures for home.

The workshop will be held in Ocean Shores, WA.
